Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil uses a sterling silver base and a minimum of 2.5 microns of 10K or higher gold. Standard gold-plated jewelry uses brass or copper as the base and applies a much thinner gold layer, often 0.03 to 0.5 microns. Our gold vermeil uses 18K gold over 925 sterling silver, making it far more durable than typical gold-plated fashion jewelry.

Vermeil is pronounced ver-MAY. The word comes from French and refers to silver gilt, which is the traditional European term for gold-plated silver. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission regulates the term to ensure it meets specific material standards.

Yes. The gold in vermeil is real gold, but it is a layer bonded to a sterling silver base rather than solid gold all the way through. Our vermeil uses 18K gold, which is 75 percent pure gold. The remaining 25 percent is alloy metals that give the gold its hardness and color. The sterling silver base is also a precious metal at 92.5 percent pure silver.

Gold itself does not tarnish, but gold vermeil can show wear over time as the gold layer thins and the sterling silver underneath begins to oxidize at the surface. The thicker the gold layer, the longer it takes. Our 18K vermeil at 2.5 microns minimum will last one to two years with regular wear and longer with proper care. Store it in an airtight pouch, avoid moisture and chemicals, and clean with a soft cloth.

We recommend removing gold vermeil before showering. Daily exposure to water, soap, and steam accelerates thinning of the gold layer. Yes. Because the base is 925 sterling silver and the surface is 18K gold, there is no nickel or copper directly contacting your skin. Sterling silver is well tolerated by most people with metal sensitivities. If you have a severe silver allergy, consult a dermatologist before wearing, but for the vast majority of people, gold vermeil is a safe choice for everyday wear.
